Morada Group's Austin guide

The Austin we would send a friend to.

This is not a list of everything in town. It is a more personal starting point for good meals, time outside, live entertainment, and a few places that still feel unmistakably Austin.

A shorter list on purpose

Start with what fits your trip.

Austin is spread out, and the best day here is rarely the one with the most stops. Choose one or two priorities, stay in the same general part of town when you can, and leave room for an unplanned meal or a slower afternoon.

Our recommendations are citywide. They are not limited to the neighborhoods where Morada Group currently has homes, so this guide can continue growing with us.

Outside in Austin

Make the heat work around your plans.

Early mornings and evenings are often the best windows for being outside. Always check current access, swimming conditions, and reservation requirements before leaving.

01

Barton Springs Pool

A true Austin institution and still one of our first suggestions for a warm day. Go early for easier parking, more breathing room, and a better start before the afternoon heat arrives.

Best for: an early Austin morning Check current pool information
02

Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk

Walk, run, or simply take in the skyline from the trail. It is quintessential Austin and usually bustling, so choose early morning or evening for cooler temperatures and softer light.

Best for: movement and city views Explore the trail
03

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

A calmer way to experience native Texas landscapes. The gardens, trails, and seasonal changes make it worthwhile even for visitors who would not normally plan a botanical-garden stop.

Best for: gardens and an unhurried afternoon Plan a visit
04

McKinney Falls State Park

A good choice when you want more than a neighborhood walk. Build a few hours around it, bring water, and reserve ahead when attendance is likely to be high.

Best for: a longer outdoor outing See park information

Culture and Austin originals

A museum, a landmark, and something a little less serious.

These stops work well in pairs. Choose a museum or landmark, then add lunch, coffee, shopping, or mini-golf nearby.

05

Austin Central Library and Seaholm

The Central Library is worth seeing for its architecture, rooftop garden, and views. Use it as the beginning of a downtown or Seaholm afternoon rather than thinking of it as only a place to borrow a book.

Best for: a flexible downtown afternoon Visit the library site
06

Blanton Museum of Art

A manageable museum visit that pairs naturally with the Capitol and the University of Texas area. Check current exhibitions, then decide how much of the day you want to build around it.

Best for: art without an all-day commitment Plan your visit
07

Texas State Capitol

It belongs on a first Austin trip, especially when combined with the Blanton, Bullock Museum, or a walk through downtown. Review visitor and tour information before arriving.

Best for: first-time visitors See visitor information
08

Peter Pan Mini-Golf

Colorful, quirky, and refreshingly low stakes. It is an easy addition to a relaxed afternoon or evening when your group wants to do something besides sit at another restaurant or bar.

Best for: families, dates, and playful groups Check current details

Where we would eat

A personal list, not a ranking.

Some are destination dinners. Others are casual places we would happily work into an ordinary day. Check hours, reservations, and same-day availability directly with each restaurant.

Belen and Jorge's favorite restaurant in Austin

Odd Duck

The menu changes, but the cooking is consistently thoughtful, creative, and connected to Texas ingredients. If friends asked us to choose one Austin restaurant for a memorable dinner, this is where we would start.

Japanese and sushi

Soto

A polished South Lamar option for seasonal sushi, Japanese dishes, and a dinner that feels special without defaulting to the same recommendation found on every Austin list.

Visit Soto
Tacos

Paprika ATX

A focused taco stop where the tortillas and carefully prepared fillings carry the meal. Go earlier rather than later and check same-day information because popular items can sell out.

Komé

A family-run restaurant that works for sushi, a casual lunch, or a longer dinner built around Japanese home-style dishes and small plates.

Bouldin Creek Cafe

Mi Ranchito

An unfussy Manchaca-area favorite for breakfast tacos, tamales, and traditional plates. This is the sort of everyday local stop that makes a guide feel more useful.

Thai

Kiin Di

A casual South Lamar-area Thai recommendation with noodles, curries, fried chicken, and dishes that give guests a more interesting choice than another generic dinner stop.

Ramen

Ramen Tatsu-Ya

The South Lamar shop is an easy recommendation, but several Austin-area locations make it possible to choose the one that fits the rest of your day.

Spicy Boys

A reliable casual meal with several locations, including a South Austin outpost at St. Elmo. It works especially well when the group wants flavor without a formal dinner plan.

An afternoon that becomes an evening

Four places where you can stay awhile.

Austin is often best when the plan remains loose. These choices give you food, drinks, music, or outdoor space without requiring several stops.

15

The Yard and St. Elmo

A cluster of local businesses that lets a group choose food, drinks, and activities without repeatedly getting back in the car.

Best for: groups with different interests Explore The Yard
16

Leona Botanical Café & Bar

A garden-forward setting with coffee, drinks, and food that can support anything from a slow morning to an evening spent outside.

Best for: lingering in a beautiful setting Visit Leona
17

The Continental Club

A strong first stop for anyone who wants an Austin live-music institution. Let the current calendar determine the night rather than planning around a fixed recommendation.

Best for: a classic live-music night Check the calendar
18

The Creek and The Cave

A comedy anchor for a city with far more stand-up than many visitors realize. Buy for a specific show and arrive with enough time to settle in.

Easy ways to plan a day

Use these as a starting point.

These are intentionally flexible. Check the map before leaving and substitute nearby places when traffic, weather, or the group's energy calls for it.

Morning

Tacos and a swim

Start with breakfast tacos, then reach Barton Springs before the busiest and hottest part of the day.

Half day

Stay in one area

Choose South Congress or Hyde Park, then walk, shop, eat, and explore without racing across town.

Late afternoon

Trail to dinner

Walk part of Lady Bird Lake near sunset, then continue to dinner while you are already out.

Indoor option

Culture and lunch

Pair the Central Library, Blanton, Bullock Museum, or LBJ Library with one nearby meal.

Evening

Comedy or music

Choose a show first, book if needed, and keep the rest of the evening simple.

More than a weekend away

Austin trips take many forms.

Morada Group homes welcome short visits, work trips, celebrations, relocations, and longer stays. Use the search page to see what fits your dates and group.

Family and celebrations

Family visits, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and holiday gatherings.

Events and weekends

SXSW, Formula 1, COTA events, outdoor weekends, and group celebrations.

Work and production

Business travel, conferences, projects, remote work, and recurring assignments.

Relocation and transitions

House hunting, renovations, insurance needs, and time between homes or leases.

Traveling with pets

Select homes accommodate pets. Review each listing's rules before booking.

Before you go

A little planning makes Austin easier.

Avoid building the day around old operating hours, perfect traffic, or the assumption that every popular place will still have space when you arrive.

01

Plan by area

Austin looks manageable on a map, but crossing the city repeatedly can consume a surprising part of the day.

02

Match transportation to the itinerary

Driving works well for scattered destinations. Rideshare may be easier for concentrated dining, music, or nightlife plans.

03

Work around the weather

Schedule outdoor activities earlier or later, bring water and sun protection, and keep an indoor backup in mind.

04

Check swimming conditions

Closures and access can change after weather or maintenance. Confirm current conditions before making the drive.

05

Do not improvise popular barbecue

Restaurants may sell out or use specific ordering systems. Review the current menu and hours before committing.

06

Check the calendar

Live music and comedy are strongest when you choose a show that fits the group instead of relying on a general venue reputation.

A quick note: Hours, admission, age restrictions, reservation policies, outdoor conditions, and menus can change. Follow the official link for the latest information before you go.
